Power Consumption

Energy consumption is becoming increasingly a target of building management, and rightly so. Federal guidelines require reduction in energy consumption and reduction in the "carbon footprint"of facilities. A carbon footprint is "the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, event or product." When fossil fuels are burned to produce electricity, carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds are released into the atmosphere. Reducing the need for energy therefore will also reduce the amount of carbon released. The newest executive order, 13524, focuses more on the carbon footprint rather than simply energy use. Coupled with a renewed emphasis on the use of renewable energies that have low if any carbon footprint, the idea is to not simply reduce energy consumption but reduce the dependency on fossil fuels.
