911

Somerset County, MDSomerset County, MD

DESCRIPTION
In mid 2005 Somerset County, MD contracted with Spatial Systems Associates Inc. (SSA) for the provision of 911 mapping services, funded entirely by the Maryland Emergency Number Systems Board.

Somerset County had essentially no mapping experience, no data aside from a tabular master address list and no database or internet expertise. They relied on SSA to develop a turnkey enterprise web-based GIS from the ground up. This work involved:

  • Creation of a base map using existing orthophotography
  • Design of a geodatabase for the many data layers to be created
  • Creation of a countywide vector cadastral layer from exiting paper documentation
  • Field verification of existence of and location of structure addresses along with GPS locations of points of egress
  • Scanning and registration of utility drawings
  • Vectorization of utility drawings, including attribution
  • Creation of over thirty different data layers
  • Acquisition, configuration, installation and testing of system hardware and software
  • Implementation of ArcSDE and ArcIMS to enable data sharing within County government
  • Development of a data maintenance plan
  • Development of customized data maintenance applications for address and street centerline data
  • Training and support of county staff

The complete system is currently in operational use by the county. SSA continues to provide as-needed support services to the County including overflow data maintenance, system support, and consultation.

Client Testimonial

"I would highly recommend Spatial Systems. Somerset County is a small rural county with a population of around 25,000. Spatial Systems did extensive work in our county on Centerline Mapping to make us Phase II compliant. Their work was very accurate; they were very professional and customer friendly."
