Field Data Collection

No matter what level of as-built information and new photography is available, there will always be a need to put personnel in the field to obtain certain information when building a GIS. For E911 systems, SSA frequently has to verify the location of egress points to specific addresses and collect photography about what that point of egress looks like in the field. For utility systems, the locations of meters, valves, the invert elevations of pipes within manholes, flow direction and condition of manholes and pipes, etc. must be captured in the field. Recently, Spatial Systems was responsible for processing LiDAR data for a client who, despite a local knowledge of the area, questioned the results of process the data. The client felt that the LiDAR data must be wrong due to a belief that the surface flow direction that was derived from the remotely sensed data must be wrong. Field investigation confirmed that the flow direction derived from the LiDAR was correct. It was verified with first order GPS survey technology and documented with digital photography.
