Projects in this section illustrate vectorization and analysis of utility and storm water data. These include watershed boundary and flow direction updates, storm water pipe and feature creation from as-built documents and countywide storm water easement creation.

Charles County, MD

The Charles County Department of Public Works—Utilities Division is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and compliance monitoring and reporting of all water and wastewater facilities owned by the Charles County Commissioners. Per EPA reporting requirements, the Department must also map its infrastructure.

In 2005, Spatial Systems Associates, Inc. (SSA), entered into a contract with Fairfax County Government’s Maintenance and Stormwater Management Division (MSMD) to assist in the development of their stormwater GIS data.

Charles County Government is subject to a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit, issued by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). The Charles County Department of Planning and Growth Management coordinates the implementation of this permit.

Spatial has been providing GIS consulting, implementation and support services to Isle of Wight County in Virginia since 1999. Services have included complete support of the planning office in their efforts to introduce and support the use of GIS technology for the County.

Spatial has been involved in several projects for Baltimore's Department of Public Works to assist in their efforts to convert utility data to a format compatible with their chosen GIS and to use field-collected data in a GIS format.

Spatial Systems developed a complete GIS for the Somerset Department of Emergency Services to assist the E911 operators in more efficiently responding to emergency calls. The project included design of the required geodatabase, acquisition and installation of hardware and software, data development and field verification of over 30 layers, training and continued support.

The City of Charlottesville has been distributing natural gas since 1951. The City’s Public Utilities Gas Department is responsible for the distribution of natural gas to more than 18,000 customers throughout the city as well as the urban areas of surrounding Albemarle County.
